UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND EQUINE FACILITIES

The University of Maryland recognizes the need for students to have on-campus access to animals for hands-on learning. Our Campus Farm is located across the street from the ANSC Building and one block from the IAA. It is equipped with facilities for horses, sheep, dairy cows, pigs, and chickens.

On-Campus Farm

Our horse facilities include a barn, five turnout paddocks, two outdoor riding arenas, and ample trails at a nearby park. The barn has ten 13 x 13' stalls, tack room, medication and supply room, feed room, and office. Recent renovations included an expanded tack room and a new wash stall and treatment area. Future renovations will include a new and improved outdoor arena!

Our Horses

The Campus Farm is currently home to seven horses that were generously donated by supporters of the Equine Studies Program. Breeds of horses include Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Hanoverian, Holsteiner, and Paint. Our horses are used to support the teaching and extension programs in the ANSC Department and the IAA. In addition, the ANSC horses are used by the UM Equestrian Club to provide a unique experience for any student at the University to learn about horse management and basic principles of balanced seat riding. Click here to learn more about our horses.

Interested in donating a horse to the University of Maryland Equine Studies program? We accept tax-deductible donations of sound riding horses between the ages of 5 and 17 yrs. Horses must be safe to be handled and ridden by beginners through advanced levels and must not have any existing medical conditions that would prevent them from being incorporated into the UM Equestrian Club's lesson program. The University of Maryland cannot participate in leases or short term trial ownerships of any potential donation horses. For more information on donating a horse to the University of Maryland, please contact at 301-405-8337.
, ANSC Assistant Coordinator of Animal Care, oversees the daily management of the animals and is assisted by a farm crew made up of dedicated UM students.

Equine Research Unit

Equine nutrition research is conducted at the Equine Research Unit located about 35 minutes north of the College Park campus on the 900-acre Central Maryland Research and Education Center in Ellicott City, MD. The Equine Research Unit is equipped with 16 matted box stalls, office and lab space, a 6-horse exerciser, and fenced pastures. Plans are also under way to expand the pastures around the unit to include a small and medium size model rotational grazing system for year round demonstrations and learning opportunities.
