FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I get both a BS in
Animal Science/Equine Emphasis and a Certificate of Equine Business
Management?
Yes. If you plan out your
academic career wisely, you can finish both the BS in Animal Science/Equine
Emphasis and the Certificate in Equine Business Management in just five
years. In order to do this, you would have to fill your 4-year electives
with courses that would easily transfer into the Institute's Equine
Business Management curriculum.
Can I take one or two
equine classes from the Institute of Applied Agriculture without completing
the entire Equine Business Management Certificate?
Yes. The Equine Business
Management courses are open to Continuing Education students. You will
need to show that you have completed high school or have a GED, complete
an application,
and mail it in! Be sure to check which courses
are available for each semester.
What type of job can
I get in the horse industry after I graduate from the University of
Maryland?
Students at the University
of Maryland that complete ANSC and IAA equine classes as well as participating
in internships and extracurricular equine activities are provided with
numerous hands-on opportunities that increase their chances for obtaining
a job in the horse industry. View a list of horse
industry jobs or read "50 Careers with Horses" by Bonnie
Kreitler or "The Complete Guide to Horse Careers" by Sue Reynolds
for more information.
Does the University of
Maryland offer equitation courses?
No. Neither the Department
of Animal and Avian Science nor the Institute of Applied Agriculture
offers riding/equitation courses. We are striving to offer programs
that will prepare students for future careers in the research, veterinary
or stable management fields, and not necessarily instruction or horse
training. However, students may ride horses owned by the ANSC Department
by participating in the UM
Equestrian Club or they may ride with the UM
Equestrian Team.
What's the difference
between the UM Equestrian Club and the UM Equestrian Team?
The UM
Equestrian Club is an on-campus organization that is responsible
for much of the day-to-day care of the ANSC horses, as well as ride
the horses in daily lessons and in-house Club sponsored shows. The UM
Equestrian Team is an off-campus based organization that also rides
in lessons, but competes in Intercollegiate horse shows using horses
stabled at Clay Hill Stables in nearby Springdale, MD.
Can I bring my horse
to the University of Maryland?
We don't have the space
at our on-campus horse facilities to house horses owned by students
of the University of Maryland. However, there are horse facilities that
board horses in the nearby area. The UM
Equestrian Club and UM
Equestrian Team offer students a low cost alternative to bringing
their horses to school.
