Conference to be held Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Anne Arundel Community
College in Arnold. Keynote speaker is Don Blazer, noted author, trainer and teacher. Other topics cover Health and
Nutrition, Equine Business, and Pasture Management. Please see the list

Mike Bell was born and raised in Livermore, California. Mike spent 2 years in the United States Marine Corps after which he enrolled at Modesto Junior College receiving an AS degree in Animal Science in 1976. He moved on to California State University, Fresno where he managed the University Dairy Herd and received a BS degree in Animal Science in 1980. Mike then went on to the University of Illinois, earning a MS degree in Dairy Science/Reproductive Physiology in January of 1983. His research focused on Ovarian Cyclicity in the Early Postpartum Dairy Cow and Heat Detection. Mr. Bell has taught a variety of courses including Horse Production and Management at both the Community College and University level. Previous to his current position, Mike served as Director of the Agricultural Technology Program at Virginia Tech. Mike is an Extension Senior Agent and Associate Professor with Maryland Cooperative Extension in Carroll County and has a long-time interest in horses.

Beale currently serves as the Extension Educator for Agricultural Sciences in St. Mary’s County. In this position, he has the responsibility to develop and implement programs in crop and livestock production, farm management and marketing. Beale holds a BS degree in Agricultural Sciences and MS degree in Management and Marketing.

Don Blazer is an author, a teacher, a trainer and a trader. For more than 40 years he's helped thousands of horses and horse owners enjoy the best of relationships based on knowledge, understanding and actions which are mutually beneficial.
The author of eight How-To books on training performance horses and horse health care, he also writes the syndicated column A Horse, Of Course, which is must reading for thousands of fans across the nation.
As a teacher, he's traveled from Alaska to Australia demonstrating training techniques and he's taught a variety of horsemanship courses for seven colleges and universities.
Show horses or race horses, he's trained world class winners at both ends of the spectrum. His show horses have competed at world championship events and his race horses have won both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Stake races.
Making Money With Horses is not only the title of one of his books, it is a way of life for him. He began his career as an author, trainer, teacher and trader at 19, and he's still at it-a syndicated column, clinics and lectures, young horses ridden daily, and occasionally he sells a horse.

Dr. Amy Burk grew
up in Anne Arundel County, MD, riding and competing horses while a member
of the Maryland 4-H and U.S. Pony Club. She received a B.S. in Biology
from James Madison University in 1995. She completed her graduate work
in Animal and Poultry Sciences as a Pratt Fellow in Animal Nutrition
at Virginia Tech, earning an M.S. in 1998 and a Ph.D. in 2001. The main
areas of her equine nutrition research were digestibility of hay and
pasture species by horses, and folate status and supplementation in
the horse. Dr. Burk joined the faculty of the Animal and Avian Sciences
Department at the University of Maryland in August 2001. She teaches
equine science and horse management courses, coordinates the graduate
training program and equine nutrition and physiology research, and provides
statewide educational leadership to the Maryland 4-H Horse Program.
Dr. Burk dabbles in eventing with her 7 yr old Thoroughbred gelding
named Chief.

Bridgett is an Equine Specialist for Blue Seal Feeds, Inc. where she works directly with horse owners and territory sales managers to optimize equine nutrition and the application of feeding management for horses. She recently graduated with her Ph.D. (2005) from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University . Bridgett was awarded the John Lee Pratt Fellowship in Animal Nutrition to study carbohydrate profiles in feeds and forages, and the avoidance of equine laminitis. She graduated with her M.S. (2003) in Equine Nutrition, also from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University , where she studied alkanes as markers to determine feed intake and digestibility in horses. Her B.A. in Biology was completed at Hollins College (1997) where she was a member of the I.H.S.A. team, and also showed hunter/jumpers in local and ‘A' rated shows. Bridgett has been involved with several aspects of the horse industry. She grew up on a horse farm in upstate New York where she began showing ponies at age 7, and continued riding and training horses through college. She currently competes with her Trakehner mare in the hunters, and also enjoys foxhunting and exercising Thoroughbred race horses. She also enjoys judging both the hunter and equitation divisions for horse shows in New York and Virginia . Bridgett is also an active member of various professional organizations, including the Equine Science Society and the American Society of Animal Science.

A graduate of the Virginia Tech animal science program for her undergraduate and graduate degrees, Dr. Kathleen Crandell received her Ph.D. in 1996 in Equine Nutrition and Reproduction. Dr. Crandell has worked extensively with Kentucky Equine Research for a number of years through which she designed and formulated feeds for several mills in the U.S. and internationally, and has been an invited speaker on equine nutrition around the world. She has consulted on the nutritional programs for some of the top equine competitors and has an extensive publication record. Dr. Crandell is currently the superintendent of the Virginia Tech Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Middleburg, Virginia, a 420 acre research farm which is home to over 100 Thoroughbred horses that are used for studying nutrition, growth and health.

Shannon Dill grew up on the Eastern Shore in Queen Anne's County. There she was very active in 4-H and FFA with the horse and pony project, judging, bowl and livestock. Upon graduation she moved to Wyoming and attended the University of Wyoming, receiving a BS in Agriculture Business and an MS in Agriculture Economics. There she competed on the Intercollegiate Horse Show Team for five years in the hunt and stock seat divisions. She is currently employed by the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension in Talbot County as the Agriculture and Natural Resource Educator. As well as agriculture production workshops Shannon also holds equine seminars for horse owners on the Eastern Shore.

Pamela B. King serves as an Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent in Charles County with University of Maryland , College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, Cooperative Extension (1988- present). Her previous assignment was in Baltimore City as an Urban Gardening Agent. In additional to educational programs for farmers, Pam also works on public issues and outreach in agriculture, with Master Gardener volunteers and with local mass media. She holds a Master's Degree in Entomology and a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, both from the University of Maryland . She has developed a special interest in agricultural security and emergency management following the 2002 La Plata tornado and now also serves as the Co-Coordinator of the Center for Agrosecurity and Emergency Management. She is NIMS (National Incident Management System) compliant.
David Marshall, VMD Assistant Professor

Dr. David Marshall grew up in central Pennsylvania, having an early passion for horses and science. He received his B.S. degree from Penn State University in 1971 and his V.M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975.
Dr. Marshall spent his first five years in private practice emphasizing equine medicine and surgery. In 1980 he returned to the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center to not only teach, but to further his equine surgical skills.
After leaving New Bolton Center, Dr. Marshall started a veterinary practice in southeastern Pennsylvania specializing in equine medicine, surgery, and reproduction. Pursuing a personal desire to return to teaching, Dr. Marshall joined the Department of Animal Science faculty at the University of Delaware in spring of 2002. He serves as an assistant professor in equine animal science and an equine extension veterinarian with Delaware Cooperative Extension Service. At the University of Delaware, Dr. Marshall teaches four undergraduate courses in equine science, pregnancy and foal physiology, mare and stallion reproduction, and equine diseases and lameness. His extension responsibilities include providing equine continuing education to the greater Delaware area.

Erin Petersen was
born and raised in Loveland, Colorado. She earned a BA degree in Political
Science from The University of Colorado in 1994. She also holds a BS
degree in Equine Science from Colorado State University (2000). Petersen
remained at Colorado State University, earning an MS degree in Animal
Science in 2001. Her research focus was aimed at investigating nutrition
of the growing horse as it relates to bone development. Ms. Petersen
is a state Extension Horse Specialist and the Program Coordinator for
the 2-year Equine Business Management Program at the Institute of Applied
Agriculture. She teaches courses in Equine Nutrition, Health Management,
Reproduction, Behavior and Pasture Management. Erin is owned by three
cats, one dog (who thinks she's a person) and three horses who like
to occasionally take her on trail rides or practice Dressage.

Rachael is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was a 2000 graduate of Penn State University, with a major in Dairy and Animal Science. She completed her Master's degree from the University of Maryland in 2002, focusing in neonatal swine behavior, specifically the ability of birth-weaned piglets to adapt to a trough-style feeding system. She is currently studying the effect of diet and weight gain on insulin sensitivity in the horse, with specific interest in the onset of insulin resistance in the horse as it approaches obesity. Rachael rides dressage and trains with the University of Maryland Equestrian Club.
A graduate of Brown University and Rutgers University Law School, Jane had thirteen years of private practice in Washington, D.C. as an antitrust and utility litigator and as Government Affairs Counsel of a major corporation, before “retiring” from active practice to devote full time to being chief operating officer of Reddemeade Farm, Inc., one of the largest commercial riding stables in Maryland. Reddemeade offers riding lessons to over 300 students, riding club memberships to approximately 50 riders, boarding for approximately 25 privately owned horses, and a summer day camp for children. In all, Reddemeade stables approximately 70 horses. Jane supervises a staff of about 20 employees (instructors, trainers and farm hands) and devotes full time to the operation of the farm. In addition to daily management, she also teaches lessons, and rides, trains and competes in dressage. She is a United States Dressage Federation Silver Medalist, and has extensive experience in competition at the FEI levels.
Doug Tregoning Senior Agent, County Extension Director
Doug Tregoning grew up on a dairy and grain farm in Montgomery County,
Maryland. He received in BS Degree from West Virginia University in Agribusiness
and Agronomy in 1977. He received his Masters Degree from the same institution
in 1979 in Agricultural Economics. He has worked as an Extension Agent
for Maryland Cooperative Extension out of the Montgomery County Office
since 1980. He has worked with equine Extension audiences on pasture/forage/business
management issues since 1989. He worked in conjunction with NRCS personnel
and Extension personnel in establishing field demonstrations on three
separate farms on rotationally grazing horses. He is noted for his presentations
on toxic plants and pasture establishment.

Kristen Wilson was born in Annapolis, Maryland. However she grew up in the state of Florida. She earned a B.S. degree in Animal Science – Equine Industry from the University of Florida in 2003. She remained at University of Florida to earn a M.S. degree in Extension Education with a minor in Youth Development in 2005. Her research focused primarily on identifying the needs of adult horse owners in Florida in order to enhance the Florida Horse Extension programming efforts.
As the Coordinator of Extension Activities, she provides statewide support for the livestock extension programming. Her programming focuses mainly in the equine, dairy, and poultry industries and providing them with information and resources on the most up-to-date research. Kristen also assists with applied research projects at a state and regional level.
