Prevention Seminar to be held Thursday, June 8, 2006. Seminar topics will cover Horse Health Programs, How to
Control the Spread of Infectious Diseases, Equine Vaccinations, and

Dr. Powell received his veterinary degree from the University of Bristol, England in 1965. From 1970-1985 he worked at the Equine Research Station of the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, England as a veterinary epidemiologist. During 1979-80 he spent a year's sabbatical at Michigan State University , East Lansing teaching a course in epidemiology to veterinary students. From 1985 to the present he has been a faculty member at the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center of the University of Kentucky, Lexington concentrating on the epidemiology of equine infectious disease.

Dr. Traub-Dargatz is a professor of equine medicine at Colorado State University (CSU), College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, in Fort Collins, Colorado . She began her veterinary training at the University of Illinois and then went on to do a Large Animal Internship at the University of Pennsylvania 's New Bolton Center , Kennett Square, PA. She practiced several years in an equine practice in Maple Plain , MN before deciding to go back for further training in internal medicine at Washington State University in Pullman WA . She obtained a Masters Degree in Clinical Sciences from WSU in 1982 and board certification with the American College of Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in 1985. Dr. Traub-Dargatz joined the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at CSU in 1983. In recent years, she has expanded her training and research interest beyond the care of individual ill horses in the hospital to include population based studies of the diagnosis and control of equine infectious diseases. She is an author on over 80 referred scientific articles and regularly presents lectures on equine diseases to veterinary students, horse owners and veterinarians.
Wendy was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.S. in Pre-Vet Medicine in 1976. She attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine where she received her V.M.D. in 1980. Following veterinary school, Wendy worked a year in private practice in Maryland, where she divided her time between a small animal and a mixed animal practice. She returned to the University of Pennsylvania to complete a Large Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship from 1981 - 1982, followed by a Residency in Large Animal Medicine from 1982 - 1984. Wendy remained on staff at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania as a lecturer and then as Assistant Professor of Medicine until 1996. Wendy is board certified in Internal Medicine.
In addition to general equine internal medicine, Dr. Vaala’s special interests are equine neonatology and perinatology, clinical nutrition and ophthalmology. While at New Bolton Center she organized the development of a neonatal intensive care program and later a high risk pregnancy program for mares at risk for periparturient complications. Wendy supervised the neonatology teaching program for students and visiting veterinarians while at the University of Pennsylvania.
In the fall of 1996 Wendy joined the staff at Mid - Atlantic Equine Medical Center in Ringoes, New Jersey where she established a neonatal intensive care facility and medicine referral service . In the winter of 2002 Wendy joined the staff at BW Furlong and Associates in Oldwick, New Jersey where she started a new foal intensive care unit and a foaling program for mares with high-risk pregnancies in addition to a general medicine referral service. In October, 2004 Wendy joined Intervet, Inc as an Equine Technical Service Specialist.
She has been an invited lecturer at state, national, and international veterinary conferences in the US, Canada, Australia, South America, and Europe. She participates regularly in seminars and symposiums for horse owners and breeders. Wendy has authored articles for JAVMA, EVJ, Compendium, and has served as guest editor for the WB Saunders Clinics of North America issue on Perinatology. In additon, she has contributed chapters to a variety of equine textbooks including Equine Reproduction, Textbook of Equine Surgery, Current Therapy in Equine Medicine, Equine Clinical Neonatology, and Equine Emergency Manual.
Wendy and her husband live in western Wisconsin on a farm overlooking the Mississippi River.
